Nexxus?

Nexxus is an experimental AI-driven dating app designed to explore how adaptive matchmaking can evolve based on real user behavior rather than static preferences.

Instead of asking users to define exactly what they want upfront, Nexxus uses AI to quietly observe interactions—such as profile engagement, match responses, and conversation depth—to gradually refine and improve match relevance over time.

This project was created as an exploratory experiment to understand how users react to AI-led matchmaking and whether such a system can stand out in an oversaturated dating app ecosystem.

[Why Do We Need This App?]

The dating app market is crowded, yet users continue to experience dissatisfaction. Despite countless options, many users report:

Irrelevant or repetitive matches

Swipe fatigue and decision overload

Difficulty understanding their own preferences

Low-quality conversations and quick drop-offs

Most existing platforms rely on explicit user inputs, assuming people know exactly what they want. In reality, preferences are often unclear, evolving, and revealed more accurately through behavior than through forms.

Nexxus aims to bridge this gap.

Finding the Chaos
(Identifying the Core Problem)

Early exploration revealed a disconnect between how dating apps function and how users actually behave. While users may express clear preferences, their actions often suggest otherwise. Existing systems fail to adapt to these behavioral patterns, leading to repetitive matches and declining engagement. The core problem lies in static matchmaking models that do not evolve with the user.

Dating apps optimize for engagement, not understanding.

Age: 29

Location: New York City

Tech Proficiency: Moderate

Gender: Male

[Goal]

Find matches that feel more relevant and compatible

Reduce time spent swiping and filtering profiles

Build meaningful conversations rather than surface-level chats

[Frustrations]

Frequently receives repetitive or poorly matched profiles

Struggles to clearly define preferences upfront

Feels overwhelmed and disengaged by constant swiping

Findings from Research
(Analysing pain points)

Users struggle to clearly define what they want

  • Preferences evolve with experience, not before it

  • Too many choices create fatigue, not clarity

  • Users are open to AI help—but want transparency

  • Trust drops when AI feels controlling rather than supportive

Core Insight:
User behavior is a more honest indicator of preference than user-declared data.

Final Problem Definition

Balancing adaptive AI matchmaking with user trust in a crowded dating ecosystem

Exploring how adaptive AI can learn from user behavior to improve matchmaking without taking control away from users.

Business Goals
  • Differentiate in a saturated dating app market

  • Explore AI as a meaningful value driver, not a gimmick

  • Improve match relevance over time

Design Goals
  • Reduce swipe fatigue and cognitive overload

  • Let preferences evolve naturally

  • Make AI feel supportive, not intrusive

  • Maintain user trust and control

[01] Visual Solution

Minimal onboarding to reduce friction

Subtle AI indicators instead of aggressive prompts

Calm color palette to support emotional comfort

Clear hierarchy to guide focus

[01] Final Design Exploration

Minimal onboarding to reduce friction

A refined match feed prioritised by AI learning
